Indonesia is a culturally rich country with strong traditions and customs. Understanding local etiquette will help you feel more comfortable and show respect to local communities.

  • Handshakes are common, but some Muslim women prefer to greet men by smiling, nodding, or placing their hands together without physical contact.
  • Traditionally, greetings are done using both hands lightly, without a firm grip.
  • Shoes must be removed before entering private homes or places of worship such as mosques.
  • Drinks are often offered to guests. It is considered polite to accept at least a sip.
  • Always use your right hand when eating, giving, or receiving something.
  • Avoid pointing with your index finger. Instead, use your thumb with the other fingers folded.
  • Most Indonesian Muslims do not consume alcohol or pork, and the custom of making toasts is uncommon.
  • Indonesians are very friendly and welcoming. You may often be asked, “Where are you from?” and be addressed as “Mister”, even if you are a woman.
  • Modest clothing is recommended, especially in Aceh Province. Women should cover shoulders and knees. When swimming, wearing a T-shirt and shorts instead of a bikini is advised.

Sumatra travel tips

Visa Information for Indonesia

  • Tourists can obtain a 30-day Visa on Arrival (VOA) at Kuala Namu International Airport (Medan) and other international airports.
  • Since July 2015, VOA is officially free for citizens of over 169 countries at Medan Airport. However, immigration officers may still request a USD 35 fee.
  • We recommend carrying exactly USD 35 in cash to avoid complications.
  • Other airports, such as Banda Aceh, may still charge for VOA.
  • For longer stays, you can apply for a 60-day tourist visa at an Indonesian Embassy before arrival.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Health & Safety Advice

  • Comprehensive travel insurance with good medical coverage is essential and is the responsibility of each traveler.
  • Consult your doctor before traveling regarding:
    • Routine vaccinations (Tetanus, Hepatitis)
    • Rabies vaccination (recommended)
    • Malaria prophylaxis advice
  • Use insect repellent (DEET 40% or higher) and wear long sleeves and trousers, especially at sunset.
  • While there have been no recent malaria cases reported in Bukit Lawang, mosquitoes are present and precautions are important.
  • Jungle trekking requires a reasonable level of physical fitness, especially for multi-day treks.
  • A general medical check-up before traveling is strongly advised.
